Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian cysts are very common in female Guinea Pigs between the age of 18 months and 3 years. This condition affects approximately 50% of all female guinea pigs and cane be life threatening. It occurs when the ovarian follicles do not rupture to release eggs. If caught early, this condition can be treated with surgery.

Causes:
  • The failure of ovarian follicles to rupture.

  • Disturbances in the levels of hormones produced.

Symptoms:

When a Guinea pig has Ovarian Cysts they usually present with the following behavioural and physical symptoms.

Behavioural:
  • Weight loss

  • General discomfort

  • Lethargy

  • Scratching of the abdomen

Physical:
  • Hair loss

  • Weight loss

  • Infertility

  • Two large cysts in the stomach area (they can usually be felt)

Prevention:

Unfortunately ovarian cysts are not preventable, but they can be prevented from causing too much harm by regularly taking your guinea pigs to the vets to have them checked. If the cysts are caught early the guinea pig can have her ovaries removed (spayed) to prevent them from bursting.
