Guinea Pigs

Common problems:

What are some common problems in guinea pigs and how can they be prevented?

Ovarian cysts are very common in female Guinea Pigs between the age of 18 months and 3 years. This condition affects approximately 50% of all female guinea pigs and can be life threatening. It occurs when the ovarian follicles do not rupture to release eggs. If caught early, this condition can be treated with surgery.

Pododermatitis is a dangerous condition that most guinea pigs encounter during their lives. It can be potentially life threatening and treatment isnt always easy, so it is best to prevent this infection from occuring. To prevent this condition, small yet vital changes must be made.

Heat stokes affect many guinea pigs without their owners even knowing, but when they become frequent, they can be life threatening. A heat stroke can affect a guinea pig even when it does not feel too hot to a human, this is due to their thick fur.
