Tortoises

Common problems:

What are some common problems in tortoises and how can they be prevented?

Eye infections are quite common in Tortoises as they cannot remove an irritant themselves. Conjuctivitis is the most common of the eye infections but it is quite easy to treat. The infection is usually caused by a scratch on the eye, an irritant or even a burn from a heating lamp. Some tortoises have allergies in certain months of the year and this could contribute to the development of an eye infection such as conjunctivitis.

Shell rot is not only common in tortoises but deadly if left untreated. Like lots of the preventable conditions in pets, shell rot is caused by a bacterial or fungal infection. Shell rot can easily be avoided with the correct meaures not only when he/she is awake, but also when he/she is hibernating.

Stomatitis or Mouth rot affects most tortoises at some point in their lives. When a tortoise eats something sharp, like a thorn a small lesion or even just a piercing can occur. Even the smallest scape or cut can get horribly infected if not kept clean. It is hard to avoid all causes of stomatitis, but some things can be changed to help prevent this painful and potentially life threatening condition.
